Well, my 5S on the home screen says: hisMail No unread e-mails" no matter how 
many unread emails I have once I open the app, no matter if I have open the 
app, downloaded my email and then closed the app without reading them, etc.
But, once I open it and touch where it says updated, that often says how many 
unread emails I have.
Very strange.
