The problem is that, for users who don't use the feature, the delay used to be way too short. Many users were entering this alternative characters menu thing when they didn't want to, and it was frustrating to figure out for some, including some I worked with directly. Apple has now gone back the other way in terms of delay, which is great for the ones who don't need it but bad for those who do. It seems like the best solution would be a setting in VO's typing settings, letting you set how long iOS waits before showing you the alternative characters.
