Hi Mary, I'm surprised it didn't work on your 5S, for me it has always worked really well, but on the 5S I just had to keep my finger on the home button for a short moment after pressing it and it just wasn't quite so instantaneous as it is with the 6S. I certainly agree about the touch ID in the 6S. I never had any luck getting a fingerprint to work for me on my 5S, but with the 6S, it does and very snappily, if that's a word, indeed. What does impress me apart from the overall responsiveness of the phone is the incredible Touch Id performance. The 5S was good and my wife's iPhone 6 is about the same, but the 6S just blows me away. If I put my thumb on the home buton I can basically push and release it just about as fast as I want and it will unlock the phone. If I'm already on the unlock screen, you can basically just touch the home button for a fraction of a second and it's done. I really think anybody who hasn't jumped onto the Touch Id bandwagon yet and who has bought a 6S or 6S Plus should really reconsider since this is so unbelieveably fast and easy that there really is no reason why not to use it.
