Hi Shai, I’m running the same setup as you are, except I have the iPhone 6S Plus. If I initiate a call on speaker which I generally do, I can raise the phone to my ear and the speaker is disabled. I can then remove the phone from my ear and hold it in front of me and the speaker is enabled. Not sure why this doesn’t work for you.
