How did you connect the cartridge to your computer? Did you need a special
cable to do this? I thought it wasn’t a standard USB, but I don’t have one to
look at right now. This would be convenient because I might want to get
courses from Hadley, and the NLS players we have aren’t working well right now.
We just haven’t called to get them replaced or sent them back, so if there is
a way to play them on the BARD mobile app, that would be great.

Actually, yes, they were zipped. The problem ended up being a corrupted
install or something, as I got it to work beautifully after an uninstall and
reinstall of the app. But it was a good thought. I knew they had to be zipped
because even the original instructions for iTunes 11 mentioned this.

As Christopher said and using the instructions Russ posted, you can
successfully transfer BARD books on your computer to your iDevice for playing
with BARD Mobile using iTunes.

I don't know what the easiest steps are to do this with iTunes 12 since I'm
still using iTunes 11. I suspect that the failure experienced by the original
poster in this thread might have been due to the book not being in a zipped
archive. The general steps she outlined sounded correct since it sounded as if
she was on the Apps tab for her device and was on BARD mobile in the file
sharing section which you must be in order to access the add to button. After
that button is executed, you get a dialog where you can navigate to the files
you want to add to the app, BARD mobile in this case. These must be zipped
files as they were when originally downloaded from BARD.

I know this works because I have one of the braille lessons from the hadley
School which came to me on an NLS cartridge for playing on the NLS digital
player. I wanted to use my iPhone for playing the lesson so I connected the
cartridge to my computer and located the lesson files on it and zipped them
into a single file. When I transferred this file to my iPhone using iTunes, it
plays beautifully in BARD mobile.

Hopefully others will have more success if they choose to transfer zipped BARD
books this way and hopefully apple will make file transfers again more
accessible with future iTunes versions.

The following info probably has been changed since it was posted to the
bardtalk list:

Loading books into the BARDmobile app

The BARDmobile app is able to play any DAISY/NISO 2005 formatted book. To load
the

books into the iOS device for playback use the following instructions.

1. If not in a ZIP archive format. You should compress the directory holding
the books

files into a ZIP file.

2. Connect the iOS device to your computer with a USB cable.

3. Open the iTunes application and select the iOS device button at the right of
the

main window.

4. select the "Apps" radio button on the main screen.

5. At the bottom of the Apps screen is a section titled "File Sharing" with a
column

list of apps. One of those will be the BARDmobile app select it.

6. Press the "Add…" button located in the bottom right of the screen. This will
give

you a dialog to select the ZIP file from step one. The book will then be added
to

the app. You may need to restart BARDmobile to see the new book.

NOTE:

At this time the BARDmobile app will only play DAISY/NISO 2005 books. Other
DAISY

formats such as DAISY 2.02 and ePub 3 will simply fail to load.

I did not think you were supposed to be able to add books to barred using
iTunes. I thought the whole point of the BARD Mobile app was to get books from
Bart off of its website using that app. What am I missing?

HI all,

I thought I’d try this with some books I had downloaded. I am using Windows 10
and JAWS 17. I tab to BARD mobile and I click on that with my mouse cursor,
because there seems to be no other way to select it. Then, I choose add file
and choose the files I want. Itunes says it is copying these files to my
iPhone, but when I unplug it and go into BARD Mobile, the files are not showing
up in audio books under bookshelf. I got one of them to show up, and don’t ask
me how. I’ve tried resetting the phone multiple times, and I have closed the
BARD Mobile app from the app switcher and gone back in, but the files will not
show up. If I choose BARD mobile again from the apps, it shows me the bard
mobile documents section with all the files I have added, but they are not
showing up at all in BARD mobile when I open it and no doorbell sound. Any
ideas? What could I be missing?
