Hello Krister and other Viphone-listers, I got information on Ibeacon-development from Mr. Ilkka Pirttimaa. Ilkka is developer of the BlindSquare orientation app. So some testing of Ibeacon goes on in Helsinki. Homepage: www.blindsquare.com
Please, see below what Ilkka wrote today: Hi! That is "kind of true" that how to make iBeacon tech scale is sort of a problem. That's why I have implemented very simplistic way to use them, so that with minimal possible amount of iBeacons we can gain much improved accessibility indoors. We have implemented 1/3 of the shopping mall in Finland, one 3 store building in Canada (CNIB HQ), another in NewZealand (BlindFoundation HQ), 14 Tim Hortons restaurants (http://www.cnib.ca/en/news/Pages/20151005_CNIB-Ontario-partners-with-BlindSquare-and-Tim-Hortons.aspx) and are now building natural science museum in US. We are also going to start at least 3 installations in Finland shortly. Right now I'm in Belgiium to look for options to start here. We will train orientation&mobility teachers to be certified installation partners, but it takes some time to train this kind of knowledge. Regardless of accessibility needs, iBeacons are installed around the world for other purposes. One of the biggest manufacturers of iBeacons, Kontakt.io, released a program called Beacons For Good (http://kontakt.io/blog/beacons-for-good-is-kontakt-ios-way-of-giving-back/). Idea there is that if premises owner who buys beacons offers them also to be used by other apps (like BlindSquare), they get discount. They also have a web site (http://beaconsforgood.org/) where anyone can suggest where beacons would make a difference, and 4 times / year one of voted places will get 100 beacons for free.
