As I said, I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here. I like my Booksense because I can just hit a button and start listening to my book without having to open an app and so on. When I go on the road, I don't take my Booksense with me, I just use the BARD Mobile App on my phone. When my Booksense dies, I doubt I'll be replacing it, but I'll sure use it a lot until then.

The same is true with a thermostat. If I had a talking thermostat, then sure, I'd probably walk up to it and hit a button to hear the temperature. Would I get a talking thermostat just so I could do that though? I don't know.

I also mess with my programmable thermostat more than you do. I have two zones, one upstairs and one downstairs. We change the programming on the upstairs zone pretty frequently, depending on how many guests we have staying with us and how long they're staying.

It isn't just because I like playing with my phone to see what I can do with it. It's actually because it makes my life easier by being able to do something remotely or use a device I already have. IMHO, it's not wrong if someone uses their phone for something just as it's OK if someone uses something else.

A programmable thermostat is a set and forget kind of thing anyway. The
only time I have to deal with it is on the rare occasions that I have to
change the batteries. if I'm curious as to what the temp is, simply
pressing a button is a lot easier than firing up the phone, opening an
app, etc. But for some I guess it can be kind of fun to see just how
many things you can do with your phone.

IMHO, keeping things simple is in the eyes of the beholder. Accessing my
thermostat, from a smart phone I already have and which I already know
how to use, seems simpler to me than having to walk up and controal a
talking thermostat which will have it's own unique interface. If I
wanted simple, I probably wouldn't have gotten a smart phone. Now that I
have one, I'm going to use it for everything I can that will make my
life simpler.

I agree that sometimes we tend to over gadgetize our lives, but if a
plain Talking Thermostat costs $150 and you can get a WiFi connected
thermostat for $99 at Home Depot then I think it’s definitely worth the
consideration especially since it happens to work well and reliably. Of
course for most people this thermostat requires professional
installation, but for many even hooking up a talking thermostat is not
something they can do themselves.

In addition to letting you adjust the temperature in an accessible way,
you can do so remotely. If, for example, I go away for multiple days or
maybe even a week or two, I can set my thermostat very low, say 55
Fahrenheit. Then when I am on my way home I can remotely increase the
temperature maybe the night before I come back to 60, in the morning
before I fly in I set it to 65 and when I arrive at home at the airport
and I’m in the taxi home I set it to 70 or 72 so by the time I walk in
the house it’s warm again. Of course there is also the situations where
I may have forgotten to turn down the heat a bit for the day if I’m at
work and with this I can easily do so from anywhere at any time.

I know that this is an iPhone list, but i believe in keeping things
simple when possible. There is a talking thermostat that actually has
physical buttons and talks all functions. It costs about $150 and can be
obtained through www.talkingthermostats.com

Hi,

Can you use that thermostat in our apartment complex? Because I live in
one. If so I definitely would purchase one of these.

I don't mind if it has the outdoor temperature, too. Or, does my
iPhone 6 even have a way to determine temperature? Thanks for any
    suggestions.
