thanks to those that have replied to my original query. I am looking into Ariadne GPS and it looks like a good option. Now I just need to get it to work the way that I want. Though it does not report the nearest intersection, it can alert you when you approach and reach a favorite point. I have set the bus stop that I get off at as a favorite. I haven't been able to ride the bus since early last week so I haven't tested this alert but I will get a chance to today. I will also check out the native Maps app to see if that reports the nearest intersection.
