Hi Lois, Mark already suggested what you have to check. The setting that has to be set to On is in Settings > Notifications > Messages and you want to look for something called "Badge app icon". If it is off set it to on and all be right in the world of text messages again. In order to verify if it is on or off you actually don't even have to go all the way into Messages after you go to Notifications. Just find Messages in the list of apps and you should hear something like this:
Messages, Badges, Sounds, Banners button. If you only hear Messages, Sounds, Banners button and "Badges" is not mentioned that means Badges are turned off and the count won't show on the badge icon.
