Thanks Alan for sharing this. Much better than the web site I found.
If you want, you could add that Consumer Cellular uses the same code as AT&T, at least for SMS. I haven’t tested MMS but it is very likely to also be the same. Steve, Below my signature is a guide I wrote almost two years ago about sending text messages with your email client on a standalone computer. How to do this is mainly a function of the mobile service provider you're sending to and their rules. I' believe most of the information is still accurate but would welcome any comments or corrections if someone takes issue to anything stated. Alan Lemly It is possible to send text messages using your email client on your computer. The messages can be plain text messages also known as SMS which stands for Short Message Service. SMS messages are usually limited to 160 characters when sent using a mobile device but might be limited to 140 characters when sent via a computer's email client. This also might depend on the recipient's service provider but I have not fully researched the limitation. Messages with pictures or without limitation on length can also be sent via a computer's email client. These messages are called iMessages in the iOS world or mms messages in general. MMS stands for Multimedia Message Service. Wikipedia has a good article explaining MMS at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service This page has a good discussion of MMS and SMS with a table that succinctly compares them: http://www.diffen.com/difference/MMS_vs_SMS The format of the sent to address governs which type of message is sent and varies for each provider. The format begins with the 10-digit mobile phone number of the recipient followed by the @ sign for all providers. What follows the @ sign varies depending on the message format and the provider. Those are provided below for the four major US mobile service providers. AT&T SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@txt.att.net <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@txt.att.net> MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@mms.att.net <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@mms.att.net> Verizon SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@vtext.com <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@vtext.com> MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@vzwpix.com <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@vzwpix.com> Sprint SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@messaging.sprintpcs.com <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@messaging.sprintpcs.com> MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@pm.sprint.com <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@pm.sprint.com> T-Mobile SMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@tmomail.net <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@tmomail.net> MMS email address: 10-digitmobilenum...@tmomail.net <mailto:10-digitmobilenum...@tmomail.net> T-Mobile is the only provider of those listed above that uses the same address for SMS and MMS messages. Apparently, its servers analyze the message and format it accordingly on receipt. -----Original Message----- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Steve Sweeney Sent: Saturday, January 23, 2016 12:47 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Text messages on a lap top?
