It's totally possible to do this in the Mail app and I've done it lots of times. it's a little tedious but gets done. Basically you copy the email addresses from your contacts into a blank note separating each with a comma. Then you create a new contact, give it the name of your group and paste the entire contents of your note into it. It does totally work and I think is less trouble than introducing another app.
