Hi Terri,

Using a dock can sometimes cause Voiceover volume to go to 0 which means it
seems like Voiceover is not working whereas in fact it is just down to 0%
volume and you can't hear it. If this happens you can try to unplug from the
dock and plug in the Apple Earpods or other wired headset since speaker volume
and headphone volume are independent from one another and often Voiceover will
work with the headset. If so, make sure you unlock the phone and put focus on
the home page. Then unplug the headset and do a 2-finger swipe up from about
the middle of the screen towards the top. You can practice this when Voiceover
works, but this will start Voiceover reading all the icons on your home screen
starting at the top. After you do this gesture repeatedly press the volume up
button and if the issue is that volume is at 0% you should hear it coming up.

OK, this is only one scenario, you wrote a lot of things down and it's not easy
to figure out what is actually going on.

As for the restore via iTunes, I doubt you actually did a restore since if you
had your phone would have been at the "Slide to Setup" screen, you would have
had to push the home button three times to start Voiceover and your phone would
have been blank as in only with the apps that come with it. Of course if you
did the restore and then specified in iTunes to restore from a previously
performed backup this may not be so, but you didn't say you made a backup so I
assume you did not have one hence a full restore would have reset the phone to
factory settings. A full restore will prompt you a couple of times if you want
to do this, then it will download the latest version of iOS to your computer
which can take anywhere from 6 or 8 minutes if you have a very fast internet
connection to 15 or 20 minutes or even longer if your connection is not so
fast. Then the actual restore on a 5S until it reboots and everything is
finished will take at least another 15 or 20 minutes.

When you say Voiceover functions were turned off, what exactly do you mean? You
can only turn Voiceover on or off, there is no half way. Of course there are
the settings like speech rate, what's in the rotor etc.
Also, make sure you don't have maybe Voiceover running but accidently muted
speech with a 3-finger double tap. This is not the same mute as flicking the
switch above the volume keys. The gesture will not turn Voiceover off, but it
will completely mute speech so that if you flick you hear the clicks Voiceover
makes, but you won't hear speech. Once again, this is a toggle gesture, do a
double tap with 3 fingers at the same time if speech is on normally to turn it
off and do it again to turn it back on. Voiceover will say "Speech On" and
"Speech Off". Maybe give that a try and as I said, if you don't have speech to
begin with but you know Voiceover is on plug in a headset and see what happens.

Good luck,
Sieghard

Subject: Really need major help with 5S

Hello everyone,

First of all, this may be a bit long. I apologize for that. I just want to give
as much detail, as possible. I am really hoping that someone knows what is up.

Ok, first off, I realized why I could not get my phone to play over the docing
station. I had totally forgot that this was an issue, and then it just clicked
in. I have to remove my case, in order for the piece to go directly in to the
phone, I mention this for a reason,.

So anyway, once I figure this out, I decide to play with Spotify. I muted my
phone, so I would not get all the alert noises coming through the speakers, and
interrupting the music.

things were going just fine. we listeneed to one album, and I was about to
switch to another. Well, as I was about to get the other album to play, I got
an alert that I just got a text message.
then all of a sudden, the phone sounded as though it said, oikm, real low, and
then made the sound it would make, if you were plugging it up.

All of a sudden, I realized that my voiceover was off, I asked my sighted
boyfriend, if he could try and help me. He was able to tell me that the volume
was all the way down. It took us a while to get it back up. I could hear the
little clicks it makes, when you are sometimes trying to turn the phone up,.

we thought it would be best to restart it, so we did. Voiceover was not on, so
I got serie to turn it on. It did, and the phone talked, until I got it
unlocked. then it was as though it was off again. but it was not!

I realized that if i talked to Seriem, and made a call, the phone would do
anything, as long as I was in the call. I also found out that I can get calls,
and voiceover will come on and tell me who is calling, and let me take the
call. Again, the whole time I am on the phone, the voiceover works fine.

A friend of mine told me that this was an audio bug, and that it happens to her
husband at times,. I do have the latest version of software installed, and have
had no problems.
My friend told me that I needed to do a restore from backup. She told me I
needed to use Itunes to do this.

well I have Itunes on this laptop, but I have never connected this phone to it.
So I went and did this, and I tried to do a restore from backup.
I do not know if I was successful, or not. I am not good at using Itunes. It
does not make sense to me, and I do not think it always gives enough feedback.
but this is just me,.

If the restore to backup did work, it did not fix my phones issue. I even
restarted the phone with my boyfriend's help, to see if that would make a
difference,.

I also called AT&T. I got a really nice ladym, who actually took the time to
try and help me,. She even tried to look up reasons I may have been having the
problem. AWe did discover that a lot of the Voiceover functions had been shut
off,. So we fixed all that.
She even thought at one time it might have been a proximity sensor issue, So
she had me do some testing with that. No luck, of course.

So then she tried to get someone from Apple. We waited 40 minutes together, and
then she left me waiting on my own. I waited about another
20 minutes, But they must have been rather busy. I just could not wait any
longer. I was getting tired, and frustrated. So I ended the call.

Does anyone have any clue as to why my phone is doing this?
If so, is there an easy fix for it?
If so, what do I need to do?
Would someone please tell me the exact steps on how to do a restore from
backup, and how to know if it was successful? Maybe I did this wrong.

I feel I may have to go to the Apple store. I really do not want to have to do
this.

Any help with this crazy mess, would be very much appreciated. I am at a
complete loss! I did not realize just how much I depend on my phone, and just
what all I do with it,. It has only been a few hours, and I miss it already.
LOL!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I really hope someone can help.

Terri
