If you received an iMessage reply then your friend must have maybe found a free Wi-Fi network to connect to, there are lots of these in the States and Canada. I believe all Starbucks and McDonalds offer free Wi-Fi, so do Safeway stores here in Canada, public libraries and some restaurants and hotels also often have free Wi-Fi for their guests or even for everybody in the hotel lobby. Interestingly enough it's usually the more inexpensive hotels that offer free Wi-Fi for their guests, go to a 4 or 5 Star hotel and you most likely get charged. My wife and I recently had to go to Vancouver and since even regular Best Western, Sandman or other chain hotels downtown are pricy in the summer, I chose to use some of my Air Miles which I had a ton of to book a hotel. They only offered higher-end hotels and I ended up booking the Westin Bayshore which is a 4 Star hotel and on Hotels.com it would have cost $320 to $350 a night. Needless to say I was very surprised that Wi-Fi was $15 a day for what they called "normal" Wi-Fi which they said was good for email and browsing the web, but if you wanted something a bit better it was $20 a day. I have a business plan for 3 cell phones which gives us 9 Gb of combined data a month so it wasn't a big deal not to get Wi-Fi, but it's a rip-off nonetheless. My glass of cold milk with breakfast was $6!!! But the hotel is dog friendly and I got a food bowl and a water bowl for my dog, a little plastic dispenser with carabiner clip which contained a roll of poop baggies and a dog bed which was about the right size for a Chihuahua, my yellow lab lay on the floor and used it as a pillow for his head *smile*.

A friend of mine is in the US at the moment. He tells me that global roaming is not working so he is unable to use his phone for text messages or phone calls and has no internet access. On spec this morning I sent him an iMessage that he sent me one in reply. I thought the iPhone used either WiFi or phone to send the message. Please could somebody explain. how this works? Thanks as always for the help. Max. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
