Hello:
If anyone is using IOS Beta 10, this app doesn’t work: at least, on my phone. From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Ron Sent: Thursday, August 04, 2016 2:03 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: New free GPS Hi all, A couple of weeks ago, someone was asking here about a GPS app that works with Google maps. At the time I stated that there would be one available in Canada only in a few weeks. Well, the few weeks are here and it is available. The fact is that it does work also outside of Canada in a limited way for now. That will shortly be improved as you will see in a copy of the message the McGill university professor sent me this morning. It is being developed by engeneering students at the university. That is why it is free. Since I have been a tester for the students since the beginning of this project, I would welcome your comments so I can pass them on. The app is called Autour which is the French word for Around. To find the app in the app store, typing Autour is not enough as that word brings up too many results. If you type in McGill university Autour it will be the first result. There is a short tutorial when you install it and you can go to the web site for more instructions. In radar mode, a click constantly goes around 360 º indicating the position of what is being announced while the beam mode is meant to be used when stopped and pointing your phone in different directions to find out exactly where poi’s are located. This is used mostly when examining a given area more closely. The app is designed to be used with an open ear headset or in the hand. Of course, when using in the hand, you don’t get the same pin point location in the radar mode. It works best in a neck pouch with the phone upside down and the screen away from your chest. When lifted horizontally, the app automatically goes into beam mode. Looking forward to hearing your comments Hi Ron, In fact, Autour is generally not intended to be usable in a vehicle at present, because we shut down data requests whenever the GPS determines that you are moving too quickly. This is to avoid overuse of your data plan. However, we are working on design modifications to make this possible, such that Autour could provide the most important information relevant for this use case, such as periodic intersection information. As for outside of Canada, yes, it works, but only with a limited subset of data. We are planning to expand this in the near future with additional database imports.
