There is now a Google News app which can probably send notifications for current breaking stories. The Google News app is the same as the news.google.com site. You can customize which sections you want to se and even create sections based on keywords. For example, I have a section from the keyword, "iPhone 7." I turned off notifications for Google News since I keepa tight reign on the apps that can send notifications, so I don't know how good the alerts are. I do check the site every so often during the week, sometimes several times a day depending on my workload and what's going on in the world, and there are some good story round-ups covered.
