If you are encountering the keyboard thing after updating, you may have to change your Typing Mode. It may have reset it back to Standard Typing. I personally prefer the Touch Typing myself. Just go anywhere where the keyboard, whether it is the Qwerty keyboard or numerical keyboard, turn the rotor until you hear Typing Mode, and swipe with one finger up or down to change.
As for the slider with different languages, I don't think it really matters what language is displayed. When I've done updates and had to slide to setup, I recall doing this when it was not even English, I think it was chinese, and when I went to the next screen, everything was in English. I don't think if you slide while it is in French, that it will set up your phone in French, I think it defaults to English.
