Mary,

Following my signature is the text from a page which discusses the Google
Important folder and how to re-train its intelligence or how to unsubscribe
from it. Be aware that this information is from a sighted perspective so I have
no clue whether the settings referenced are accessible. The information pasted
comes from this website:

http://support.postbox-inc.com/hc/en-us/articles/204362930-Gmail-Important-Folder

I'm pretty sure that like all things Gmail, no actual folders are involved.
Gmail groups everything based on labels and I suspect if you're seeing the same
message in multiple "folders", it's because it has more than one Gmail label
assigned to it. You would normally be the one charged with assigning these
labels but it sounds as if Google takes it upon itself to try and tag important
messages based on some algorithm.

Good luck and I hope this is helpful.

Gmail Important Folder

Having lots of unimportant e-mails labeled “Important” can be annoying. The
“Important” label is assigned to a message by Google, based on Google’s
adaptive understanding of your interests and priorities. There are a couple of
things you can do about this. You can do either, or both.

The Slow Fix: Re-Training Google

You can re-train Google about what’s important to you by removing the label
from each message you don’t consider important. If there’s message that you
think is important that Google’s has not labeled properly, you can assign the
Important label to it. Eventually, Google’s behavior will more accurately
reflect your wishes.

Here’s how to remove a message’s label in Postbox:

1. Select an e-mail in Postbox’s message list.
2. Hover your cursor over the Important label in the upper-right corner of
the message and click x when it appears to let Google know the message is not
important.

Here's how to add a message's label in Postbox:

1. Select an e-mail in Postbox’s message list.
2. In the upper-right corner of the message, you’ll see a popup menu.
Description:
http://support.postbox-inc.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/202237834/Popup.jpg
3. In this popup menu, select the Assign Label submenu.
4. Assign the Important label to the message to let Google know the
message is important.

The Quick Fix: Hiding the Important Folder in Postbox

You can unsubscribe from Google’s Important folder, so you don’t have to see or
deal with it. (It remains on Google’s servers. It’s just hidden in Postbox.)

Here are instructions
<http://support.postbox-inc.com/entries/484524-subscribing-to-imap-folders>
for unsubscribing from the Important folder.

After unsubscribing from the Important folder:

1. Go to Postbox (OS X)/Tools (Windows) > Preferences/Options > Accounts >
[your account] > Advanced…
2. Check the Show only subscribed folders option.
3. Restart Postbox.

I'm not exactly sure when this folder turned up. It could be, that it has been
there for a long time. But I see that it has a lot of messages in it. Some of
them seem to be duplicates that her and other folders, but I'm not sure about
all. And if they are duplicates, I don't need them twice. Anyway, if somebody
knows how to get rid of it or how to keep it from filling up, that would be
great.

Hi Mary, this folder, for me, was there even before I got an IOS device. Not
too sure whether you can get rid of it, and if so, how, or what's it's purpose.

Subject: What is the "important" box in Gmail?

Hi all,

I have noticed that I have a box in my Gmail account called "important". I
never set this up, nor did I specifically flag messages or senders whose posts
should be put there. Yet I have something like 200 messages in this box.. How
did that happen? How can I stop that? Or how can I just get rid of this folder,
which I did not create?

Mary
