Your friend with Verizon was able to use it likely because Verizon has cell towers with LTE signals nearby. T-Moble also supports LTE. I believe some areas outside urban centers only use CDMA transmission, an earlier cell phone standard. By the end of the decade, Verizon will phase out CDMA transmission entirely and use LTE. Until that happens, your phone likely cannot use Verizon's network in certain places.
