It turns out that the problem was undoubtedly "server busy." When I tried using my iPad to login, I got one of those server busy deals, and voiceover actually read it, unlike what happened on the Apple TV, where voice over read nothing. When my cited husband got home, I tried it, and the first time yielded one of those server busy notices, which VoiceOver did not read. The second time, it worked. So VoiceOver needs to read that message, and it didn't.
