I got a very good result in about 10 seconds with it set to high accuracy. This is on my 5s running iOS 10.1.1. Do you have anyone around who could test using your phone? There is no way I can possibly imagine that the screen curtain could make any difference while using the back facing camera, which is what it defaults to every time. I did try using the front facing camera, but got nothing. The next time I hit take photo, the camera was set to the back facing, so unless you are somehow accidentally toggling the camera to front facing every time you use the screen curtain, which I don't think is possible, you are doing something different when the screen curtain is on.
