Not sure if I understand correctly. You ask if you should have your phone with you, but you also say you need the phone to pay for the ride. If you need the phone then I guess you have to bring it, if there is a problem with the phone using data which is being billed as roaming data, then just turn Airplane mode on during the ride and until the time when you need the phone to pay.
