Jim, the charger is slightly concave and the back of the watch is slightly convex and as you figured out the watch attaches magnetically to the charger. If the charger is plugged in to either a USB port on the computer or a wall outlet adapter and you stick the watch on the charger then you will hear a ding sound about a second or two later indicating the watch is charging. Also, if you go into the control panel by swiping up with two fingers on the watch screen and then double tap on the battery percentage it will say that it is charging.
