The magic tap is simply a 2-finger double tap, same as what you use on the iPhone for answering/hanging up calls, starting/stopping playback etc.

I also find that sometimes when I tap the watch just once nothing happens and I have to press the digital crown to wake it up other times I do a 1-finger double tap because I want the time silently as vibrations and it wakes up and jabbers away. What seems to work consistently for me with respect to answering calls is to press the digital crown when the phone/watch rings as it seems to always place focus on the answer button this way.
