If in your mail settings you have turned on the Confirm before deleting toggle, then when you read an email and then double tap on the trash can and then double tap on the Confirm delete button, the focus of voiceover lands on the trash can once the next email appears rather than landing on the Sender of the new email. What a relief that the Apple Accessibility lady discovered the same problem on her phone and agreed it was a bug rather than something I was imagining or doing wrong! So the workaround is to turn off the Confirm before deleting toggle in Settings--Mail. I prefer to Confirm but for now will do without. Good old Apple Accessibility team!
