When I first open messenger I am at the home tab and I see no settings button
at the top left. I have search at the top right and new message at the top
right.

Hi Jim,

The Settings button is there when I first open Messenger and I’m in the Inbox
so to speak where all my messages are displayed. Once I double tap on a message
to open that thread the top left says “Home back button”.

Below is a fairly detailed description of what is in Settings for those who
have never explored it and who benefit from reading a description/tutorial:

If I double tap on the Settings button I now have a Done button at the top
left, then in the middle and over to the right it says “Me” which is a heading.

Underneath that is an unlabelled button. If I double tap it I get to a screen
where I have the following:

Cancel button at the top left

To the right of that and in the middle but also at the top at the same level as
the cancel button are two buttons labelled “My code button, 1 of 2” and “Scan
Code button, 2 of 2”. To the right of that is a “Share” button and most of the
screen is taken up by another item Voiceover just announces as “button” and
which seems to be a barcode somebody else can scan with their phone, I assume
it will quickly and easily add your information to their Messenger list, sort
of like a QR code.

If you double tap on that unlabelled button a menu pops up with the following:

Reset Code

Share Image

Save Image

Cancel

I selected Save Image which put it in my camera roll, here it was announced as
“One Face”. I then used iDentifi to recognize it and it came back and announced
it as “Messenger Avatar”.

When I changed it from “My Code” to “Scan Code” I got a message on the screen
to hold the camera up to a code, there was also an unlabelled button which when
I tapped it brought up my camera roll. I selected the image I had previously
saved and it told me this:

Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard Weitzel from your phone contacts is also on Messenger

Sieghard is in your Messenger contacts

Then it had a “Type a message” text field and I guess I could have sent a
message to myself, but of course this is meant to scan somebody else’s code to
add them to your Messenger contacts.

A couple of unlabelled buttons here, but nothing that’s a deal-breaker.

Back on the main ‘Settings screen underneath that initial unlabelled button
which takes you to all of this are the following other items which are all
labelled properly:

Sieghard Weitzel – this is just underneath the unlabelled button (you get to it
if you swipe right and that is what I am doing to get to all of these options
now)

User name button: double tap on this and it will tell you the user name you
have on Facebook, in my case it is SieghardW. I can now tap on “Edit User
Name”, then I can find an explanatory message: Your user name becomes part of
your custom links that let people visit your Facebook profile and reach you on
Messenger. Need help, get tips on choosing a user name.”

When I tried to edit it to just say “Sieghard” without the first initial of my
last name it told me that this was an unavailable user name. Basically this has
to be a unique identifier where you could type in
<http://www.Facebook.com/SieghardW> www.Facebook.com/SieghardW ad it would take
you straight to my page. I guess even my relatively unusual name is not so
unusual on Facebook and somebody else already had just the first name.

Next on the Settings screen is “Phone” followed by your number. If you double
tap on this it asks “Is this the number people can use to reach you? People
can add you as a contact if they already have your phone number, but only you
can see this number on Facebook. Your phone number helps you connect with
friends, get SMS updates and more”.

You then have an edit field with your number or you can add/change it and at
the bottom is an “OK” and “Not Now” button.

Next on the main settings screen is a “Notification” button which for me is
“On” and when I double tap on it I get various options to adjust notifications.

Next is a “People” button which has an option to turn on or off “Sync
Contacts”, you also have an invite and a block button.

Next is a button called “Photos, videos and emoji”. It gives you various
options related to photos and videos and it has a button to turn on “Messenger
Emoji” which has the explanation underneath: Switch system emoji with messenger
emoji. I guess if you turn this off you can just use the regular iOS emojis
instead of the emojis Facebook offers.

The last options on the main settings screen are Apple Watch, Secret
Conversations, Switch Account, Report a Problem, Help and Privacy and Terms.

The Apple Watch button gives you I think 6 preset reply options which you can
customize and change here and I don’t know what Secret Conversations are,
haven’t seen anything where I can indicate I want a conversation to be secret.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Davy,

I updated to whatever the latest update was yesterday and have no issues. Can
you be more specific wit some examples where you have problems or where things
are not labelled?

I noticed that the third of out the 5 tabs at the bottom is not labelled, for
me it says from left to right:

Home, Calls, Tab 3 of 5, Groups, People

When I double tap on where Voiceover says “Tab 3 of 5” Voiceover says “Tap to
take photo or video” and I get a screen with a Close button at the top left,
then a button to turn the flash on, a button to “Flip Camera” which is followed
by Voiceover saying “Backfacing Camera” and then I have buttons labelled
“Stickers”, “Draw”, “Text” and a “Previous” and “Next” button.

If I go to the “Home” tab I see all my conversations, I have a “Settings”
button at the top left, a search field in the middle and a “New Conversation”
button at the top right.

My conversations are announced as to whether they are “Unread” if they are new
and Voiceover says “Actions available” which tells me there are rotor options
which are Activate (default), Mute, Delete and More.

More gives me a pop-up menu with Block, Mark as Spam, Archive, Mark as Unread
(or mark as read if it’s unread) and Cancel.

If I double tap to open a conversation I get a “Home, back” button at the top
left, the name of the person in the middle followed by when they were last
active and at the top right are “Audio Call” and “Video Call”.

I am just looking at a message where somebody just sent me a single message, it
is read out perfectly with time and all and if I swipe right Voiceover says
“Type in message… text field is editing”.

Underneath this is a row of items I can find by touching/dragging my finger or
I can swipe right and all are announced:

Emoji, Camera, Photos, Stickers, Gifs, Voice, Games, More and Like.

As soon as I start typing something th “Like” button at the far right changes
to a “Send” button.

The only oddity is that the far left item, Emoji, says “Selected” even though
the regular keyboard is up. If I double tap on it the Emoji keyboard shows and
the icon now says “Text, selected” and I can double tap on that to go back to
the regular keyboard or there is also a “Toggle Text input” button at the very
bottom left of the Emoji keyboard. If I use this to change back to the regular
keyboard the top left item now says “Text” and if I double tap it it goes back
to “Emoji, selected” but the keyboard stays on text until I tap this again.
Like I said, this is just a bit inconsistent, but everything else for me seems
to be perfectly accessible.

If I want to send a voice recording instead of a text message I can tap on
“Voice” and the entire button part of the screen above the home button but all
the way across becomes a big “Record” button. You have to double tap and hold
this just as in Whats App messenger and after you let go anything you record is
automatically sent.

Tap on “Text” at the far left of that row of icons to get out of voice
recording mode and bring the on-screen keyboard back.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi folks

Since messenger 100.1 the app has become dramatically less accessible.

This is the report I sent to facebook this afternoon. So don’t update the app!

The latest update of Messenger 101.0 is very unaccessible, most buttons and
tabs are nolonger labeled. this has been the case for update 100.1 as well,
despite numerous messages sent by the blind community Facebook refused to
restore accessibility. Now this issue will be sent over by me to numerous
newspapers and all forums of the blind community saying that facebook is
reluctant to solve these accessibility issues since update 100.1.

If facebook is nolonger willing to take accessibility into consideration for
Messenger usage, please make the latest update before v100.1 back available on
the Apple appstore.

Regards

Davy
