You can easily see the battery level of the case provided one airpod is in the case. To get a good overview of your battery status, go to the today view by doing a three-finger right swipe from the home screen. Next, set your rotor to headings and make you way to the batteries widget. Another easier way is to put an airpod in the case while the other is in your ear and then close and open the case holding it near your iPHONE. A window will pop up displaying the status of each airpod as well as the case battery level. The case can't transmit anything on its own which is why an airpod has to be inserted to check its battery level.
