This is the email I got from Winston just now. It seems like other people have written to him about the issue we've been discussing, because as can be seen from his reply, he knows about it, and will be fixing it soon.

VDR response:
IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you’re experiencing an issue with NeoSpeech voices, we’re aware of it and a fix will be released very shortly. NeoSpeech gave us a bad license file a year ago.

We’re so sorry for the inconvenience. Rest assured that it’ll be fixed as soon as we possibly can, and it won’t happen again!

In the mean time, you could set the date of your device before 3/12/2017. But we don’t advise that, since it can cause other issues.

I can confirm this as well. It was strange, because yesterday I was reading a book on my iPhone using James with no problem. Last night, I read another book on my iPad and started using James, and had the problem. I haven't tried it again on the phone. I am definitely going to be riding to Winston. Don't expect a quick answer. The last time I wrote him, it took literally months to get a response Something has really changed over there.
