Having started this thread, I thought I should provide some closure about what I've recommended to my clients. The explanation that the over-the-air updates were pulled, but that iTunes updates were still available seemed to be a bandaid solution to me, so I recommended that they consider upgrading their phones from 5's to 7's. These are elderly people, but not hurting financially, by any stretch of the imagination.
Their primary concerns seemed to be about needing to use the connecter into the power jack for a patch cord while driving, but I think they'll be willing to do this, once they get used to the idea. The husband has normal vision, and connects his phone via blue tooth, and they don't want to mess with having a second phone trying to talk over Blue tooth. Sometimes it's really hard to give up technology that you love a lot, but I think they'll be willing to move ahead. Thanks to all on the list who provided answers to my inquiry.
