Well, in my case, several minutes has been 75.

If people could define "several minutes", "a little while", "just a few", it
might be more helpful for those of us who think we are stuck.

I am now two hours into things and nothing happens no matter what I try. I
know the phone is getting power because it is warm when attached to the wall
cord. Otherwise, nothing. Not with headphones, nothing when attached to the
PC, tried triple clicking home button, etc.

So, I guess I have waited just a little while.

If there are any suggestions, it will be most appreciated -- short of take
it to the Apple store...

It will.  It takes several minutes for speech to come on.  Just be patient
and it will come back.
