The app is required but the hardware is not required. The Show is not available until June so we won't know how accessible that will be. It has better speakers, and htat's about all I think it's good for unless you can look at a 7" screen. Some have commented about difficulty with setting up the app. It's hard even with Voiceover off, very sluggish. But I found that if you totally restart the phone you'll be able to click on the links with VO. Just interact slowly with it because it's extremely sluggish at best. Otherwise, what a fun feature this is.
