Excellent concise notes. I much prefer this to podcasts, so your e-mail was
appreciated.--Joe

Subject: Few iOS 6 usage notes

Hi,
I have also installed iOS 6 on my 4S. So far, it's better than I expected
(faster response, better Siri and so forth).
Few usage notes:
* Mail gestures: If you go to message list in mail and if you swipte down
with one finger, you'll hear "delete". This is part of "actions" rotor and
can be thought of as context-sensitive options. By default, Mail opens the
message in question.
* VIP: To add some contacts as VIP: From messages list in Mail app, go to
Mailboxes, then tap VIP. Then go to Add button and choose some contacts (one
at a time). Then exit out of VIP folder. To add some more contacts later,
from Mailboxes list, go to "more info: VIP" button and edit VIP contacts
(you can remove them as well).
* Fetching new mail: in Mail app, swipe down with three fingers to refresh
the messages list.
* YouTube: If you installed Google's YouTube app before upgrading to iOS 6,
you'd notice that YouTube app is gone. To fix this, restore the phone to an
earlier backup (not the OS, but data) which contains Google's YouTube app.
If not, go to App Store and download YouTube app again. Also, Google's
YouTube app does not allow background video playback while on another task
unlike Apple's version.
* switching programs: You can actually switch to other tasks using Siri; you
can say "switch to (appname)" in addition to "start (appname)', "open
(appname)" and (run (appname)". You cannot close an app using Siri.
* Battery meter: if you have iTouch and iPad, if you go to
Settings/General/Usage, there is a new heading which gives time on battery
power (since last full charge).
* VoiceOver: The much talked about "punctuation rotor" is the last rotor
item under VoiceOver/Rotor settings list. There are three options: none,
some and all. Also, Braille Sense products can now be used again as braille
display with iOS.
* When you use Do Not Disturb mode, anyone in your phone's favorites list
can call you while suppressing other alerts.
* You can now set custom vibration patterns for alerts.
* There is a focus issue with Mail app: when you exit out of a message,
VoiceOver jumps to the topmost message. I'm sure some of us reported this to
Apple.
* If you're using third-party navigation solutions such as Ariadne GPS and
if you try to explore the map, it will not work for the time being thanks to
underlying changes to map API.
* Because of new keyboard behavior, when you enter phone numbers from keypad
in phone app, you might want to remember the exact positions of the dial
keys, otherwise you may find yourself entering wrong phone number. For
instance, if you'd like to dial voicemail number (long press of 1), try: tap
once with four fingers near top half of the device, then swipe with one
finger to the right and double tap and hold on 1 key.
* By default, Passbook is located between Weather and Notes app on
homescreen. At this point, Starbucks is the only app which takes advantage
of passbook functionality (at least from App Store).
* In Spotlight search, if you type the name of an app, iOS returns the
folder in which the searched app is located.
* In Safari, if you double tap and hold on either forward or back button, it
opens browser history.
* FaceTime under 3G/4G/LTE would require that you check with your carrier
(some ask that customers switch to data sharing plan; this includes AT&T).
Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph
