We all have different requirements as well as expectations, I basically always
use a headset of some sort, typically the Apple Earpods, when I am out and
about so I don’t have to touch my phone to ask SIRI a quick question, just have
to push and hold for a moment the centre button of the remote on the headset.
I just had a look and I don’t recall that sub menu button being there before
the last update, but here I agree that they could label this as “More Info” or
something like that. As for the map, I am blind so it never occurred to me to
even want to use it, if I want a map to explore by touch Apple Maps is not bad
for that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the Seeing Eye app is the greatest
there is, any app can always be better, but it does work as advertised for me
and seems to give consistent information which I find is usually accurate. I
have used it on busses in Vancouver and it usually announced cross streets when
the bus was just before it got to the intersection which to me is when it makes
sense, I don’t want to hear it too early and I don’t want to hear it when the
bus is already half way across.

Sieghard

Hello,

When I am traveling, I do not wish to pull my phone out of my pocket to ask
Siri about my location when, at minimum, the app ought to give me intersection
announcements and POI's as advertised, and I have found that this is very
spotty. I should say that the places where this was tested get excellent GPS
reception, and the device used is an iPhone 7ing

Also, the unlabeled item is in the location tab... It states "submenu button"
which, in my mind, needs a description about what is contained in that menu...
and the map is completely useless for a voiceover user.

Thanks.

I just turned 50, but I’m very physically fit and active, I have currently a

from that I don’t care too much if it tells me every 5 seconds that I’m on so

Also, you mentioned an unlabelled button, can you explain where it is as I’d

How are you able to get it to reliably announce, say, intersections? How well

with the statement the Seeing Eye is "wealthy?.

Hello,
I tried out Seeing Eye GPS today, and experienced some issues that make me not
want to purchase this app. Here is what I noticed, and if there are
work-arounds, please let me know:

  * Lack of Customization: This app seems to not allow me to choose what I
want announced when... it allows me to view information, but the interface is
busy and unnecessarily clunky in my opinion.
  * The announcements don't happen when the device is in my pocket as the app
says they should... I do have background setting turned on. Even when the
device is unlocked, on a bus the app missed every other street or more at
times. And when walking around, results were not much better. I did like
intersection descriptions though...
  * The frequency of updates was every 15 seconds. My phone got warm, and I
often did not hear information... this is similar to the above, but 15 seconds
can be a long time to walk if you are a fast walker before you receive accurate
information.
  *   Lack of information: I don't see where I can get lat/long.
  * Inaccessible map: This app is for the blind, and has Seeing Eye's name on
it. It is a complete and utter shame that the devs of this app did not see fit
to make the maps accessible, or at the very least to provide an alternative to
the inaccessible maps.
  * Terrible button descriptions: One of them just says menu... While I can
explore and press things until I figure out what they do, who is this app for?
Was it designed for the techy that doesn't care about button descriptions and
labels?
  * Finally, the price... The map data this app uses, so far as I can tell,
is free. There may be an up-front cost to provide this to the user, I am not
sure... but I believe there is not. What is the user being charged for exactly?
If it is for app improvements, then I am really appalled that, in all the time
this app has been on the appstore, this is the best the devs can do.

I am critical of this app, but I am hoping someone can set me straight or tell
me what I am missing here. I am glad they offer a free trial, otherwise I would
be requesting a refund. I cannot recommend anybody serious about independent
navigation use this app. Intersection descriptions are about the best thing
this app does right. While that is useful, I am not sure that that is worth
paying a recurring subscription or $299.

On iOS, I recommend blindsquare simultaneously with Google maps. Nearby
explorer did not meet my standards. Although blindsquare and nearby explorer
was said to use foursquare for its maps, blindsquare was superior. I don't care
much for the intersection analysis as i use my auditory senses for that.
BlindSquare provided more accurate information and more points of interest.

Well, if you would consider buying Seeing Eye GPS, you may as well just buy the
iOS version of Nearby Explorer since it is significantly less expensive.
Or, a combination of Blind Square with Google Maps is almost as good as Nearby
Explorer.
I don't know about the latitude/longitude option with any of the apps since I
do not use it.
I hope you find a good combination.

Subject: GPS Apps

Hello,

On Android, I used Nearby Explorer. I contacted the dev to see if they would
offer some sort of a discount as I already purchased their app once, however
was told I would need to pay for the app. On Android, I found it quite good as
I could choose what I wanted to be announced, and I could choose whether to use
onboard or online maps. It had features that no other app used. I am
considering purchasing the app on iOS, however I am interested in others'
experiences with navigation apps. I am looking for an app which will announce
intersections accurately as I approach them, as well as points of interest. It
would be good if it offered turn-by-turn navigation, although I would mostly
use Google Maps for that. Getting heading is good. Rarely, lat/long is good as
well, as I do enjoy getting out to geocache from time to time.

So, any thoughts? It's fine if it is more than one app... Will BlindSquare meet
my needs? Should I consider the Seeing Eye GPS? Any other apps that I should
have on my list?

Thanks all.
