Another way I have found to maintain the audio playing in the background is by getting out of the screen with the various radio feeds (close button) and back to the main page with the mlb, gameday audio and so on buttons and from there, double click the home button. The audio won't drop in this case and from the app switcher, I can press the home button to get to the home screen like normal and go in and out of apps and lock the screen without losing the feed.

So, I tried turning voice-over off then when the screen went in to the locked mode, the audio did not go away. I then triple-clicked and no sound from the phone was heard, however upon performing a second triple-click, voice-over said voice-over on, and it's all good.
