Unfortunately with text messages there is no way to recover them. You do use the Edit button, after that double tap each message or conversation you want to delete, Voiceover will say that message is "selected". If you have say 10 messages and you double tap on 4 of them these will be selected, then tap on the Delete button at the bottom and these 4 messages get deleted.
