Hi,

I use the Fidelity app on my iPhone relatively often to manage some
financial matters. That said, on the account screen I rarely read my actual
account numbers digit by digit. However today I was filling out a form and
needed to copy the account number so started to read the number character by
character. That is when I made an interesting discovery.

Fidelity appears to have constructed the account numbers for accessibility
purposes with words instead of digits. For example if my account number is
123456, what Fidelity actually puts in place are the words one, two, three,
four, five and six separated by spaces for the account number. So if you
start reading by character, you are stepping through letters of each word,
not the digits.

I suspect this was done to not have the account numbers spoken as a long
complex number when using general item navigation to next item. If you
simply read with the VoiceOver default, the result is that the account
number is spoken as separate digits i.e. one next item gesture would read
one, two, three, four, five, six. If digits were used, VoiceOver would try
and read the number as one hundred twenty three thousand four hundred fifty
six. This would be even more confusing because immediately after the
account number is the balance.

So I'm curious how people feel about this choice by Fidelity? For the
general case, they appear to have chosen something that sounds fine but
clearly if you read by character or braille is less than ideal.

If you are a user of the Fidelity app, you can experience this by picking
the account tab, then stepping through the details of any account listed on
that screen.
