Les, here is what I did to link it to Alexa.

After installing the Nest and creating a Nest account, I had Alexa “discover”
the Nest. You can do this either from the Alexa app or by telling your Echo
product to “discover”.

In the Alexa app, I went into the skills section and did a search for Nest. I
found the Nest skill and enabled it. You are taken to the Nest site where you
have to put in your credentials for logging into your Nest account. Once you do
that you get a screen letting you know that the Nest is now linked to Alexa.
After that I created a group called Thermostat but that is actually optional.
When using Alexa to control the stat, it will understand whatever name you
assigned to your Nest when you first set it up. In my case it was “Upstairs”
which is actually the location of where the Nest is installed.

At this point you should be able to issue commands using the name you assigned
as the Nest’s location so in my case, I can say “Alexa, set upstairs to 76
degrees” and it’s done and Alexa replies by saying “upstairs is set to 76
degrees”.

Now, because I also set a group called “thermostat” I can also use the word
thermostat to issue commands to Alexa. So far the commands I’ve been able to
use are:

Set Upstairs to XX degrees

Raise upstairs x degrees

Lower upstairs x degrees

What is upstairs set to

What is the temperature inside

Set upstairs to cool or heat

Set upstairs to away or home

There may be other commands but those ar the ones that I’ve used thus far
successfully.

If you do a search on YouTube, you will find several videos demonstrating some
of these commands.

Also, take a look at:

https://nest.com/support/article/Learn-how-to-control-your-Nest-Thermostat-with-Amazon-Alexa-on-Echo-and-Fire-TV

There you will find some guide lines with additional links pointing to other
pages where you can dive deeper. HTH

Hi Rick,

Glad you are happy with the Nest. I have had the Nest for a couple of years,
and like you, I haven’t worried about the schedule. I let it determine our
habits and remember them. I will say that I have encountered some problems
when we’re away when it saves energy. For some reason, the thermostat’s
program got activated while we were away. So when traveling, I deactivate that
feature. Sometimes, I think these devices outsmart themselves! I do have a
question. Can you assist me with linking the Nest with Alexa? I thought I had
done it, but apparently not, as it doesn’t respond to Voice Commands. What
Voice Commands work? Thanks for any assistance.

Best,

Les

I now have the Nest thermostat installed and am very happy to report that the
Nest app is quite accessible. I’m able to change various settings and raise or
lower the temperature. I’ve also linked it to both Alexa and Google Home so
controlling it by voice is really nice and works very well.

I have the Nest set to work as a learning thermostat so I haven’t messed with
schedules yet and am just allowing Nest to do its thing and create it’s
schedules by learning from my commands to set temperatures throughout the day.
The Nest also knows when nobody is home and it set’s itself to Away mode to
save energy. I’m very pleased with the Nest learning thermostat.
