Hi Kathy,
Another email list covering the Amazon Echo is run by Denny Huff and has a much lower volume of traffic than the one Merv posted. To subscribe, sned a blank email to echo-j...@gatewayfortheblind.com with a subject of Subscribe. I'm not having issues with the Amazon Alexa app on my iPhone 7 running iOS 11.1.1 although occasionally the app can lag a bit. I suspect this is due to traffic at the Amazon computer farm as opposed to problems with the app. I find the app particularly handy for reviewing my installed skills since, like you, I have quite a few. To do this: 1. Open the Amazon Alexa app. 2. Double tap the Menu button in the upper left corner. 3. Swipe to the right to cycle through the vertical menu until you hear skills and double tap. 4. Focus should still be on menu in the upper left corner of the screen that opens and swipe right through all skills until you land on Your Skills which is one to the right and double tap. 5. A vertical list of your skills will be presented which can be easily swiped through to refresh your memory or to open and review their nature or tweak their settings as needed. The All Skills page which opened when you executed the Skills option from the menu also contains a search box which is nice for targeting skills based on keyword searches. Thanks for your excellent summary of what the Amazon Echo offers. First, I also have issues with the Alexa app that I have installed on my IPad running IOS 10.3 or whatever the last update was for IOS 10. I have always had issues with the app even prior to the release of IOS 11. I find that sometimes apps run better on my phone than on my tablet but I never got around to installing it on my phone. You can enable skills from the app by tapping twice on the skill that interests you and then double tap on enable. The easier way to enable a skill is by simply telling alexa to enable the skill by using its name i.e. "Alexa enable Jeeopardy". There are tons of games you can play on the Echo such as Jeopardy, Catagories which is similar to the board game scattagories, Trivia Geek, Trivia Talk and many others. You can enable skills such as recipe finders which may or may not require you linking accounts with websites such as all Recipes etc. You can informational skills such as Word of the day or Web MD. Farmer's Almanac, and fun facts on subjects ranging from dogs to fruit. If you subscribe to Spodify, IHeart Radio or Amazon Music, you can connect or link those accounts to the Alexa app and begin listening to music by simply using voice commands to instruct alexa to play your play lists from any of these sites. There are lists you can create such as shopping lists which is convenient. As the week progresses and I run out of items that I may need at the grocery store on Saturday, I can simply tell Alexa to add the item to my shopping list. I will end by saying that you can also shop through Alexa or the Echo on Amazon and order through voice command to Alexa. There are so many uses for the Echo and the only problem I have is recalling all the skills by their names as I have so many skills enabled. You will find that in order to enable or use a skill that you must ask alexa to open the skill name and if it is not said correctly, she may not respond. So I am constantly having to go back and review which skills I have enabled as I forget that I either have a skill for it or forget the name. There is an Echo list that I subscribe to but I am not sure of the email address for signing up. If I find it, I wll be sure to pass it along. What can it do other than reminder and alarm? I would appreciate any help that I get. Thank you all in advance.
