These are all good points ... I'll just add that a weak battery can be fixed much more cheaply with something like a Mophie battery/case than paying for a new phone.
I can't remember for certain when NFC was added to iPhones, seems like it was the 6S models, so I would upgrade if I had a phone without nfc just to have ApplePay, which is a great convenience to the VI user when available.
