Les, I have no solution to this. Just letting you know that you are not alone with this issue. The only way around it as far as I can tell is to bite the bullet and unlock the screen and pull down the notification center. I wish that wasn't the case but the screen locks way too quickly, not giving one a chance to review new notifications.
