Tom,
I just figured out how to get directions from Apple Maps without starting the
route.
When you look up a destination, you get a distance with a street name, then a
go button.
Instead of double tapping on the go button, double tap on the distance.
Then you get each step listed with a done button in the upper right.

YOU can also first pick Drive, Walk, or Ride before doing that.
They used to have a button I thought for listing directions, but I usually use
Google Maps until recently, I more often go back to Apple Maps.
HTH,
Richard

A lot of times I look up a rout and want to be able to look at the rout without
actually travelling it yet. I used to do this but for some reason cannot
figure it out. How can I get directions somewhere and look at the rout step by
step using Apple maps and iPhone 6S? Thanks for any suggestions.
