If you use Fantastical II, then you can have both reminders and calendar appointments in the same place. Also, Fantastical lets you set more than 2 alerts before a calendar event. At times, I have set 3 alerts for a doctor appointment, 1 a week before, and the other two leading up to the appointment time. I typically use the calendar for appointments and to remind myself of automatic monthly payments, and the Reminders I use for very important things I need to do right away.
