Hello Harry,

One thing you could try is going to VoiceOver Settings and choosing Practice 
Gestures. Then the person could try flicking and tapping. Maybe if they get 
specific feedback from VoiceOVer about which gesture they are doing, and they 
have the security of knowing that their gestures won't hurt anything, they'll 
be able to figure out ways to have the flick interpreted correctly.
