You already got the right answer for your second question. Here's some help with your first one about where archived messages are. Don't worry. You haven't lost them. What happens is that they're taken out of the primary inbox. You can stil find them by searching for something in their address or subject using the search facilities. Also, if you go into "all mail" from the navigation menu, you will be able to access all of the messages including archived ones. The primary inbox focusses on messages you have received and not dealt with yet. Don't forget to look in that spam folder every so often. Gmail has one of the best spam filters I've ever come acrosss but it occasionally gets one that isn't spam.
I've really come to prefer Gmail and the Gmail app over the regular mail app included in iOS. It just takes a bit of getting used to as Gmail has its own philosophy about how email should be handled and organised. Hope that helps you manage things.
