I figured out why it the cold restart wasn't working for me. I had my iPhone connected with the lightning cable to my computer and that apparently prevents the cold restart. Quickly pressing volume up followed by quickly pressing volume down followed by holding down the side power button for about 10 seconds did cause it to do a cold reboot. I also tested that this works from a locked iPhone state.
Alan Lemly Hi Anna, I’m trying those instructions with my iPhone 8 but when I press the power button after first quickly pressing the volume up followed by quickly pressing the volume down I get a Power off iPhone question. On my iPone 7, when I held down the applicable buttons, I'd get the Apple logo on the screen indicating the cold restart. I guess I haven't mastered the right touch to do this so does anyone have any suggestions? I tend to do a cold restart every few days so I want to master this.
