I believe there is a free online version, which of course uses data. Otherwise, on iOS, the paid version downloads the maps to your device. You can download the map of Canada separately from the US map. I believe the map of Canada is about 1 or 1.2 gb, where as the US map is close to 3 gb. HTH, Richard
