Mark, Thanks for your interest in this.
I probably reboot on average once a week or less unless I run into some strange behavior. I had this happen once on my home screen, and the other time when I was trying to unlock my phone with fingerprint ID. I have a very small amount of vision, so the next time this happens I will try to figure out what may be on the screen. Be that as it may, of all the people that I personally know who own iPhone 8, about 12, specifically, I have not herd of the problem about which we are discussing. How often do you reboot your phone? Even though many will disagree with me on this, I strongly recommend that you reboot your phone at least once a day; that's at a minimum, in order to insure peak performance. Also, can you tell us what the display looks like when the virtual home button stops functioning? If not, the next time it happens, if possible, have a sighted person describe the display. I checked my serial number and it is not among those eligible for this fix. At least that eliminates this as a cause. I guess I will just see if it happens again and go from there. I will paste in the text to an article that references this matter along with its link. It sounds to me that the non-responsive Home button may be a symptom of the faulty logic board described in the article. Mark Apple Issues Recall For Defective iPhone 8, Offers Free Repair With Outrageous Caveat Jean Baptiste Su Jean Baptiste Su Contributor i Enterprise & Cloud Vice-President and Principal Analyst at Atherton Research For seven months, Apple shipped iPhone 8 devices - originally launched last September - with a defective logic board. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez) Apple has found that a small percentage of iPhone 8 devices have a defective logic board that hosts the phone's main electronic components, including the microprocessor (or the device's brain), the memory and the wireless chip. The affected devices that were sold between September 2017 and March 2018 in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, and the U.S. may experience unexpected restarts, a frozen screen, or won't even turn on. Apple will not repair previously damaged iPhone 8 The logic board of the Apple iPhone 8 with the A11 microprocessor and Qualcomm's 4G modem.iFixIt Apple said it will repair eligible devices free of charge but with a major caveat: If your iPhone 8 has any damage that could impair the ability to complete the repair, such as a cracked screen, you will have to fix it before Apple will change the defective logic board. This is quite outrageous as Apple could claim that even the tiniest flaw that has nothing to do with the defective logic board, like a minor screen crack, a defective button or a crack in the back of the device, would need to be fixed first, incurring hundreds of dollars in repair just to be able to fix your faulty iPhone 8. Owners of a defective iPhone 8 will either have the choice to pay hundreds of dollars to fix their phone to finally have a properly working iPhone or opt to keep their faulty iPhone 8. To find out if your device is affected by a dodgy logic board, use the serial number checker here. iPhone 8 Plus models or other iPhone models are not affected by the buggy board. Atherton Research's Take It's outrageous that Apple refuses to fix the defective logic board (or a dodgy battery in the case of older iPhones) from a previously damaged iPhone 8. Yes, a cracked screen can make it harder for a service specialist to open the defective device and then put it back together. But how much would that really cost the most valuable company in the world - Apple is now valued at over a $1.1 trillion - to also repair the cracked screen or even replace the faulty device altogether, especially, as Apple puts it, that only "a small percentage of iPhone 8 devices" are affected by the manufacturing defect? Come on Apple, don't let your users down again. Make the right choice and fix all the defective iPhone 8 devices, no questions asked. Not only because it's the right thing to do and that you can easily afford it, but also because it's just good business sense. It just feels like I am touching anywhere else on the screen. After trying it several times, it has so far started working again. It worked fine for about two weeks between the two times where I had an issue. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone has any suggestions short of taking it to an Apple store. Unfortunately I don't have one near me.
