Hi pete, When you have a book open, choose Appearance, one of the buttons at the top of any page. I'm totally blind, so i can't be certain, but there are a couple of options on that screen that I'm sure control the background. There are several options for Color Theme, one of which is Night. There's also a toggle for Auto-Night Theme. My guess is that choosing options other than Night for the first one and turning off Auto-Night Theme will give you a different background color.
