You might want to see if your printer manufacturer has an app you need to
download for your phone.
Apps like these usually have drivers that are automatically installed on
your phone that let's the phone know to connect to a printer.
You may also want to check your printer for a direct connection.
Most printers, as of 2005 or so, have direct printing capability, meaning
they'll connect directly to the printer via Bluetooth or infra-red, so no
network is required. The thing is you have to be close.
I don't mean a few feet, though I guess it depends on the model of printer,
but usually in the same room will do.

If you have WIFI in your home, I think once you sign in with your WIFI
password, the iPhone and printer should be able to communicate.
