Sorry, Robert, that is not where you turn this off. Automatic switching to the
speakerphone is a Voiceover feature not a general accessibility feature hence
it is in Voiceover settings.

The call audio routing section says this:

Call audio routing determines where audio will be heard during a phone call or
Facetime Audio.

The options are Automatic (the default), Bluetooth headset or speaker.

You can also turn on auto answer here which if turned on lets you set a time in
seconds and if you turn this on and, for example, set it to 5 seconds then if a
phone call is received the call will be answered automatically after 5 seconds,
i.e. you don’t have to do a 2-finger double tap or tap on “Answer”.

The setting this person wants to turn off can be found in Settings > General >
Accessibility > Voiceover > Audio

It is called Auto select speaker in call, by default it is on.

The explanation underneath says “During audio calls automatically switch to the
speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear.

Does your friend have a case on the phone? I used to have some issues with that
with my 6S Plus, but I also have an iPhone 8 and it never does this any more
unless I really hold it away from my ear. I wonder if her case somehow
interferes by covering or being too close to the area near the top of the phone
where the proximity sensor is located.

Regards,

Sieghard

The feature you are speaking of is in

Settings/general/accessibility then swipe down to ‘call audio routing’.

Subject: Auto Speaker phone on iPhone 8

Hi Folks,

A friend of mine just got an iPhone 8 and is having the problem of the speaker
phone coming on at odd times whether she has taken the phone away from her head
or not. Also, when she tries to make it turn off it often won't do it. I had
this trouble with my iPhone 4S but have never had it on my 6S. In fact my
speaker phone never comes on unless I go and hit the button to turn it on. My
question is does anyone know if there is some setting which will turn off the
auto speaker phone feature? I couldn't find anything obvious in my phone yet
mine never comes on. She is very frustrated with this and wants to take her
phone back if she can't get it to stop. Thanks.

Karl
