It keeps the phone from going into landscape mode when you tilt it. This is helpful if you are listening to a long Email, or something, and you move your phone so it begins to tilt to one side or the other. If it switches to landscape, VoiceOver stops reading.
Things like Netflix that shows videos landscaped are not affected by this.
